The Bellefontaine Middle School Mathcounts team recently wrapped up its season.

A virtual competition (because of the pandemic) featured 6th-8th graders.

BMS was the only school in the tri-county area to compete in this event.

Topics in the competition included: Number Theory, Geometry, Algebra, Probability and Statistics, Sequences and Series, Proportional Reasoning, and Problem Solving.

The fast-paced competition had time constraints.

Sprint Round - 40 minutes to solve 30 questions without a calculator (completed as an individual)

Target Round - 24 minutes to solve 8 questions with a calculator (completed as an individual)

Team Round - 20 minutes to solve 10 questions with a calculator (completed as a team)

BMS competed against the following middle schools: Ankeney, Coldwater, Coy, Dayton Regional STEM School, Franklin Monroe, Incarnation, Magsig, Milton-Union, Oakwood, Springfield Shawnee, Miami Valley, Tipp City, and Watts.

The Bellefontaine team consisted of mathletes Max Fissel (8th grade - 3rd year Mathcounts participant), Lorenz Henry (8th grade - 3rd year Mathcounts participant), Claire Brown (8th grade - 3rd year Mathcounts participant), and Brody Miranda (6th grade - 1st year Mathcounts participant).

Fissel led the Chiefs. He placed 24th out of 99 students.

Lawrence Miller has coached the BMS Mathcounts team the last three years.

He said, “I’m trying to blend in educational math games with math lessons to make learning math fun.”

BMS Mathcounts practices will resume in the fall. The regional competition will be held in Dayton in February 2023.
