The Bellefontaine Board of Education learned about the award-winning PBIS (positive behavioral interventions and supports) program at their monthly meeting Monday night in the Distance Learning Center.

Bellefontaine High School Assistant Principal Cliff Core and Bellefontaine Middle School Assistant Principal Gavin Yoder led the presentation.

The four behavioral expectations are the same in each grade level at BCS to establish continuity. They are: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be a Learner, and Be a Chieftain.

Core explained how PBIS is used at the high school.

“Students are shown the expectation throughout the building from teachers, administrators, and support staff. This is focused on reinforcing those expectations each day.”

Bellefontaine Middle School and Bellefontaine Elementary School recently earned PBIS Bronze Recognition from the state.

Yoder said the middle school launched a PBIS program in 2015-16.

There were 1,073 referrals to his office that school year.

The number of referrals dropped to 538 the following year.

The middle school scored 22 out of 30 points to earn the Bronze award.

Yoder said the school is now aiming for silver or gold.

PBIS does not ignore negative behavior and does not reward students for doing what they’re expected to do each day.

BHS Principal Jason Brown gave an overview of the Chieftain Pride Lab (formerly the Success Center).

Last month, BCS was awarded a 21st Century Grant. The 5-year grant has a combined maximum value of $850,000.

The grant is helping fund the Chieftain Pride Lab, which offers academic enrichment, credit recovery, career exploration, and job shadowing.

The money from the grant allows for the school to pay for teachers to instruct beyond traditional school hours.

Some students work in the morning, then go to the Chieftain Pride Lab from 1-5 p.m. each day.

Brown touted the early feedback on the lab.

He said, “I just spoke with a mother today that was so happy. Her son dreaded school every day and saw it truly as an obstacle. Now, he works in the morning and gets his education in the afternoon. He loves school now and his mother feels that we’re a true partner in his education.”

The Chieftain Pride Lab provides a multi-tiered level of support for students.

This includes a mental health component, monthly parent meetings, and 100 hours of summer programming.
