Chieftain Roll Call spotlights BHS Marching Band

The latest episode of “Chieftain Roll Call” spotlights the Bellefontaine High School Marching Band.

Initially, the Bellefontaine High School Key Club launched the podcast in January.

The newly-formed Chieftain Backers are in charge of the podcast this year.

The weekly show focuses on BHS Athletics and student organizations.

The most recent show features Bellefontaine High School Band Director Jeremy Karg, Assistant Band Director Heather Johnson, and senior band members Ally Barker and Peyton Hayduk.

Karg detailed the band’s halftime show this year, which is titled Fly Me to the Moon.

The featured songs are “Moonlight Sonata” by Beethoven, “Rocket Man” by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra, and a ballad from Apollo 13 the movie.

Karg discussed the band earning “2” ratings at Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District band contests at Ottawa-Glandorf and Versailles earlier this fall.

“The Pride of the Tribe” will compete in district contests at Springfield Shawnee and Tecumseh on Saturday, October 22nd.

Karg and the guests explained what it will take to earn a “1” or Superior rating this weekend to qualify for State.

Karg also previewed the marching band’s trip to Florida over Christmas Break.

Bellefontaine will perform in the Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando on December 29th.

The trip will be December 27th-31st. The cost is approximately $1,250 per student.

Johnson, Barker, and Hayduk talked about their respective roles in the band.

Barker is the alto saxophone section leader.

Hayduk is the mellophone section leader.

Barker and Hayduk detailed their plans after graduation, too.

The first guests on this episode were Bellefontaine assistant football coach Rick Reed and junior center Jack Varner.

Reed and Varner reflected on the win vs. Jonathan Alder on Senior Night (October 7th.)

The Chiefs outscored the Pioneers 27-7.

The game was tied 7-7 at the half.
