Bellefontaine City Schools is proud to kick off its Thursday Tribe Member of the Week.

Mary Smith, who’s a longtime math teacher at Bellefontaine High School, is the inaugural recipient.

Title: I’m a Master Teacher and the instructional team leader for the math department. I’m able to teach mathematics, biology, and chemistry. I earned a master’s degree in biology.

Years of experience: I have 32 1/2 years of teaching experience, including 24 at BHS. This is my last year of teaching. I will be retiring in the spring.

Why you love being a Chieftain: I’ve always been a Chieftain. I’m a lifelong resident of Bellefontaine. My father was a teacher at BHS and I graduated from BHS in 1976. I love being a Chieftain because of the people I get to work with and meet. There is a special bond between staff and students at the high school. I feel that everyone is caring and helpful. You never feel alone in a venture. Our community is also very supportive of the education system. This is a special place to work. I feel at home here. Go Chiefs!!

Classroom motto or quote to live by: "Leave the world a better place than you found it!"

What you love doing outside of school: I love spending time with my family. I have 5 siblings that live in Bellefontaine. I also have 4 children and 3 grandchildren.
