A Bellefontaine student had a memorable 16th birthday on Tuesday.

Sophomore Alexis Kady Buffkin served as the Honorary Mayor of Bellefontaine.

The rare opportunity unfolded during the annual Discovery Riders fundraiser last month.

Buffkin’s grandmother, Shirley Henry, bought the auction item.

Alexis enjoyed a full day of activities.

She was picked up by a city fire truck at her house early Tuesday.

She enjoyed a tour of the fire department led by Fire Chief Andy Fissel.

Buffkin and Mayor Ben Stahler then visited the Bellefontaine Regional Airport.

Airport Manager Steve Buchenroth gave them a plane ride across the city and county, including Indian Lake.

Buffkin and Stahler visited Small Nation on West Columbus Avenue.

Mayor Stahler and other leaders were interviewed about Bellefontaine’s growth.

After lunch, Alexis met the county commissioners and economic development director.

Finally, she met with Bellefontaine Police Chief Brandon Standley.

Mayor Stahler presented Buffkin with a signed proclamation detailing her day as the honorary mayor.

Buffkin recapped her day. “I learned a lot about the first concrete street. It was really cool to fly over Bellefontaine and meet with Small Nation.

“The mayor has a lot of jobs each day.”

Stahler said, “It’s very fulfilling to get a snapshot of local government. There’s so much that happens behind the scenes each day.”

Alexis is the daughter of William Buffkin and Jessica Coleman.
