Bellefontaine High School students are giving back during the holiday season and beyond.

Students in the community experience class volunteer for Meals-on Wheels each week throughout the school year.

The students deliver meals to older adults and homebound individuals each Thursday and Friday across Bellefontaine.

Last Friday, students made stops at Notestine Manor, Shawnee Springs, The Heights on Saxon Drive, and a home on Greenwood Street.

Longtime high school teacher Rick Reed said, “The social interaction is very beneficial for the residents and our students. Meals-on-Wheels is a critical part of supporting some of our senior citizens and getting to be a part of that is rewarding for all of us. We couldn’t ask for a better opportunity for our students.”

Reed drives the route and supervises the students on the late-morning deliveries.

Meals-on-Wheels provides hot and cold meals along with a drink choice.

Frozen meals are delivered on Friday for the weekend.

LifeCare Alliance, which is a non-profit organization based in Columbus, oversees Meals-on-Wheels.

LifeCare Alliance operates hot meal routes five days a week in Logan and Champaign counties.

BHS also launched a service learning class in August.

The students have been doing service projects with several community partners, including the Bellefontaine Police Department, Logan County Metropolitan Housing Authority, Logan County Veterans Services, Our Daily Bread, Lutheran Community Services, Discovery Riders, and Bellefontaine Parks and Recreation.
