Bellefontaine Intermediate School hosted a Valentine’s Dance Party last week for a special cause.

Students and staff raised more than $2,500 for 3rd-grade cancer survivor Ema Martinez.

Ema has spent a considerable amount of time in Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus. She has not been able to attend school this year until a few weeks ago. She currently attends school two hours a day.

The Student Lighthouse Team decided to host the dance party.

The team consists of fourth- and fifth-grade students whose leadership skills and hard work set a good example for their peers. The students are responsible for the marquee in front of the BIS, a monthly newsletter, caring corner clothes/supplies for kids in need, and lighthouse status classrooms with Lindy Martin. In addition, they are heavily involved in other events such as this one.

Fourth-grade teachers Kenna Davis and Kylie Croston served as advisors for the dance.

Davis said, “The students were inspired by the dance we had last year benefiting teacher and cancer survivor Lori Horn.

“The kids wanted to host another event for a student here at the BIS. We were able to sit back with pride and watch as these leaders planned and made many of the decisions to make the dance a success. The kids worked extremely hard to make this happen. We are very proud of them!”

The dance party was held in the gym. Attendees also enjoyed a scavenger hunt, concessions in the cafeteria, and a raffle with items for the students.

Over 300 kids attended the fundraiser.
