The large renovation project at Bellefontaine High School has made significant progress in the last two weeks.

Crews started a large cooling project at BHS in late May.

Waibel Energy Systems from Vandalia is performing the $1.2 million project over summer break.

Waibel has been the service provider for HVAC at BCS for several years.

ESSER II funds from the federal government will pay for the project, which will provide healthier air and increased energy efficiency.

The new chiller system will cool the original 35 classrooms at BHS. That portion of the high school was built in 1968.

Upon completion, each classroom will have individual temperature controls.

The new equipment will incorporate CO2 sensors, fresh air, and ionization for a healthier air environment for students and staff.

Last week, chilled water lines from each classroom univent to hallway feeder lines were stubbed (installed) through to the hall on the first floor.

Work on the controls for the new univents is ongoing.

Heating lines to the new univents on the second floor are all connected down the northwest hallway. Crews are working on classrooms on the northeast side this week.

There’s another project happening at Bellefontaine High School.

Energy Optimizers, USA from Dayton is performing the $3.7 million project this summer and next summer.

ESSER III funds from the federal government will pay for the project, which will lead to energy and maintenance savings for years to come.

The project will provide a cleaner indoor environment, a healthy learning environment, extend the life of the building, and avoid future capital costs.

The specific components of the project include: replace an outdated chiller, add cooling to the high school gym, replace aging piping, remodel restrooms, replace two sections of the roof (library and center classrooms), new doors and windows, flooring, and building controls.

Here's an update on the ESSER III project.

Core drilling holes through the block walls to the gym are complete. This will allow for the installation of chilled water piping.

Plumbing contractors discovered that shower drain pans under the boys locker rooms were extremely deteriorated. They ordered new drain assemblies and will have them permanently epoxied into the tile floor. This extra work will be covered under the existing scope and budget.

Crawl space plumbing is progressing well, with hopes of turning water on later this month.

Painting started last Friday in restrooms. Painters are using a new product specifically designed to bond well to ceramic tile blocks from this construction era.

Ceiling grid border installation is complete. Many light fixtures have been reinstalled, and border ceiling tiles are beginning to be installed. Smoke detectors, speakers, and exit lighting/signs are going back in as well.

Flooring contractors started the epoxy floors in large restrooms on Monday. The band room, office, and library areas are all ready for flooring contractors.

Work continues on replacing 25 variable air volume boxes and controllers. The variable air volume box was installed in the band room ceiling last week.

Concrete core drilling for the new mop closet floor sinks is complete. These new floor-mounted "mop sinks" will go in the 1st and 2nd floor custodial closets.
