It’s Thursday morning and a small group of students, 4 from each grade level, have gathered in the library to discuss ideas on how to motivate and encourage their teachers. The group started as the Passion Project of a 7th-grade student.

The Passion Project is a yearlong science assignment in which students are supposed to choose something that they are passionate about, research it, and then produce something to create a positive change in the world.

This 7th-grader wanted to let their teachers know they make a huge difference. “They are so helpful and impactful in all of the students' lives. They are wanted and needed, and make a big difference to us all. We need teachers, and they need to be motivated, which is what this group would be about.”

After recruiting their friends, this 7th-grade student formed a group with representatives from each grade level. Mrs. Maus, school counselor, agreed to supervise the group and provide logistical support, as the students wanted to remain anonymous to teachers.

The group has produced a monthly student-to-teacher newsletter containing teacher shout-outs, jokes, an Understanding Students section, and a Goals section. They gave out pencils, chocolates, and a kind note to teachers for Valentine’s Day and hid eggs with candy and kind notes in them for a staff Easter Egg Hunt. They came up with an award for each teacher and made award certificates which were then handed out at a staff meeting and were greeted with many laughs and some “awws.”

Many staff then hung their certificates in their classrooms. The 7th-grade student who started the group comes up with all the ideas and the other students work cooperatively and diligently to carry out the ideas. Students in the group say they enjoy meeting and making a positive difference in the school, even though it is not their project. One 6th-grader even asked, “Can we do this again next year?”
